The Canadian Shield |
Because of the Ice Age, glaciers removed the soil, resulting in a barren rock surface. The land is rugged and hilly with many lakes varying in sizes. The eastern section of the region is part of the ancient Canadian Shield. Retreating glaciers affected the drainage of the shield. As a result, debris deposited by the glaciers blocked rivers or forced them to flow in different directions. This lead to chaotic patterns of rivers, lakes, swamps, and muskeg.
